Mean Tweets

Two weeks ago, the german newspaper „Bild“ started its‘ refugees welcome campaign: „Wir helfen“ (We help). Bild explained that they wanted to „send a clear signal for humanity. They wanted to show that Germany has a heart for people that need help.“

This weekend, „Bild“ wanted all national league football clubs to wear the „Wir helfen“ logo on their jerseys. Yesterday it became known that The Hamburg club St. Pauli would not take part in this. In response, „Bilds‘„ chief editor, Kai Diekmann, sent out tweets saying that #refugeesnotwelcome the at the Hamburg football club and associated the club to the AfD (a german right wing party).

The german tabloid has often titled with anti-foreigners stories in the past
Diekmann is trying to make the public believe that whoever does not support the "Bild" campaign is against refugees. Many criticized these Tweets. On the German Journalistic organization‘s blog, an article said Diekmanns' behavior was a disgrace and that refugees should not be exploited like this. It further stated that "Bild" is using the campaign to get a positive image, #refugeeswelcome seems to be nothing more than a PR stunt.

St. Pauli is known for its‘ political and social commitment, only last week they invited 1000 refugees to their match.

  1. More and more football clubs are boycotting the "Wir helfen" campaign. Union Berlin, SC Freiburg and VfL Bochum said they would not wear the "Bild" logos on their jerseys. Supporters of other clubs have also publicly declared that they do not support the campaign. TSV 1860 supporters said on Facebook: "Helping a newspaper, that has agitated against football supporters, refugees and other unpleasant groups of people, cannot be in the interest of the league nor our club and " Borussia Dortmund supporters held up banners at their Europa League game that read: #bildnotwelcome
